The students were warmly received by Mr. Barzan Ezalddin Salh, a Social Researcher representing the Medical Network Organization Japan in Iraq, who welcomed them to the hospital and provided an informative overview of the institution’s specialized services for cancer patients. He also guided the students through various sections of the hospital and introduced them to the young patients undergoing treatment.

On Thursday, October 16, 2025, students from stages two to four of the English Language Department at Cihan University–Erbil carried out a heartfelt community activity at an orphanage in Erbil, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Rozhin Hosseini. The activity was organized in celebration of World Food Day, aiming to promote compassion, social awareness, and community involvement among the students.
Upon their arrival, Assistant Lecturer Rozhin Hosseini and the students were warmly received by Ms. Diman Ali, the manager of the orphanage, along with several staff members who expressed their appreciation for the thoughtful gesture. The students then distributed food and snacks to the children, fostering a cheerful and inclusive atmosphere.

The campaign, held on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Noor Sami Omar, involved students visiting Sami Abdul Rahman Park and the markets in the city center of Erbil. During the campaign, they distributed informative brochures to women, girls, and passersby, outlining the risks of breast cancer, its causes, and the importance of early detection. At the same time, the students engaged citizens in discussions about the role of radiological imaging in the accurate diagnosis of the disease. They also encouraged women and girls to undergo regular check-ups for early detection of breast cancer, emphasizing its crucial role in improving recovery rates and reducing the risk of severe complications.
At the conclusion of the campaign, the citizens expressed their appreciation for the initiative and commended the students for their efforts.
On Sunday, October 26, 2025, was supervised by Assistant Lecturer Noor Sami Omar as part of the department’s outreach activities aimed at promoting public health awareness within the community, particularly regarding the early detection of breast cancer.

The lecture focused on risk factors, the significance of early screening, and its role in improving recovery rates. In addition, entertainment activities were conducted to help demonstrate the concept and purpose of the visit.

During the visit, the students presented information on the importance of radiological imaging in the early detection of breast cancer. The session highlighted risk factors, the value of early diagnosis, and its role in improving recovery outcomes. The students also demonstrated basic self-examination techniques in a simplified and age-appropriate manner for the high school students.

November 17, 2024, the English Department hosted a successful seminar titled “Between Shadow & Soul: Secret Love—A Study of Pablo Neruda’s Sonnets for Matilda Ruthie”. The event focused on Neruda’s Sonnet seventeen (XVII) and his passionate yet secret love for Matilda, his third wife and muse.
A key highlight of the seminar was the first-ever Kurdish translation of Sonnet XVII, which was presented and discussed by experts from both the university’s English Language & Translation Department. The session explored the challenges and beauty of translating Neruda’s deep emotional expression into Kurdish.
The seminar featured a keynote address by Ms. Tafan Kamal Kareem, specialize in English literature and creative writing. She delved into Neruda’s poetic legacy and its resonance in Kurdish-speaking communities.
The event brought together students, academics, and poetry enthusiasts for an insightful exploration of Neruda’s work, as well as the intersection of love, language, and translation.
On Monday, December 2, 2024, the English Language Department at Cihan University- Sulaimaniya organized a workshop titled “The Fight for Freedom: Commemorating the Abolition of Slave Trades,” aimed at exploring the historical significance of the abolition of slavery in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
The workshop featured a distinguished lineup of keynote speakers, who each delivered insightful presentations on various aspects of slavery and its abolition across different regions and time periods.
One of the speakers, Mr. Rezheen Nawzad Latif from Sulaimania University, gave an engaging talk on the acclaimed film 12 Years a Slave, using it as a lens to discuss the brutal realities of slavery in the United States.
Ms. Tafan Kamal Karim, presented on William Wilberforce and his pivotal role in the abolition of slavery in England. She discussed Wilberforce’s tireless efforts and the social and political challenges he faced, shedding light on the moral and legislative movements that ultimately led to the end of the transatlantic slave trade in the British Empire.
While Ms. Shaimaa Mohammed Ahmed, also from Cihan University of Sulaimaniyah, offered a fascinating exploration of the historical evolution of the term “slave” and how its meaning has changed over time. Her talk traced the development of the term across different cultures and civilizations, offering attendees a deeper understanding of the historical context behind the institution of slavery.
